Revenue Model

Most people want to do good things with their lives and make a positive difference in the world. Altruism is great, but at the end of the day, if something isn't self-sustaining, it won't last long or have as much of an impact. Revenue is the lifeblood of all businesses, so we've ensured that the ShopCity Community Commerce Platform has ample revenue potential to fund the ongoing marketing and management of the platform.

What's the Revenue Potential?

Great question. Click on the graph image to the right to use our interactive calculator.

This calculator allows you to adjust conversion rates, package breakdowns, retention rates and more to create an accurate portrait of the revenue potential within your community.

All amounts shown already take into consideration the revenue share paid to ShopCity to provide and maintain the platform.

Please note that these projections only include subscription revenue.

How Is It Monetized?

To fund operations and marketing activities, the ShopCity.com Community Commerce Platform utilizes a subscription revenue model that enables all businesses to use the system for free (some people call it a freemium, SaaS model) while offering increased service levels, exposure and capabilities to businesses that purchase premium subscriptions.

Subscription Packages
Prices of premium packages generally range from $25 to $400 per month, and can be customized at a local level.

There is no contract required and payments are processed by credit card, PayPal or pre-authorized deposit.

Check/cheque payments can be used for annual packages, which generally range from $150 to $4,800 per year.

Keep reading to learn why a business would upgrade to a paid package.

Managed Services
For between $200 and $400 per month (on average), a business can subscribe to a Managed Package that provides them with a dedicated account manager who contacts the business regularly via their preferred method (phone, email, even in-person) to help them enter their content into the platform and do their internet marketing.

While we originally launched with a totally self-service model, we found that many businesses do not have the time or technical expertise to effectively market their businesses online.

A significant portion of our customers now subscribe to a managed package.

Enhanced Exposure

Businesses that purchase premium packages show up at the top of search results, with Managed subscribers first, then Advanced Package subscribers, then Value Package subscribers, followed by Intro and Basic subscribers, then free basic profiles.

Premium package subscribers are displayed by the date in which they upgraded, so the first business to upgrade to a premium package will show up above the second business to upgrade, etc.

Businesses that upgrade to an Advanced package or greater also have their logo displayed on top level category pages - ex. Restaurants. Five logos can be displayed at a time, and they are randomly selected every time the page is refreshed.

Advanced Package or greater subscribers also get the ability to have their marketplace items featured on the top of the homepage.

More Features, Higher Limits
Premium subscribers receive new features, such as videos and self-serve daily deals.

They also get higher limits, including unlimited marketplace items and email subscribers as well as lower processing fees on gift certificates and daily deals - ex. 5% vs. 15%.

Other Revenue Streams
In addition to subscription revenue, a percentage of self-serve daily deal and gift certificate revenue is collected as well. The amount depends on the product, and on the business' package, but generally ranges from 5-15% of gross revenue, and up to 30% or more for featured daily deals.
